The prices of the French designer bag company are the same across Europe. So all the prices in France are also valid for Italy. The only thing that might be different is VAT refund amount. It differs slightly across all EU countries, however, both France and Italy have a VAT of 20% so no difference here.
How To Get a VAT Refund
Despite what you have read in our blog, you'll hear that VAT refund is around 20%. It means you can get 20% of the price you paid back provided that you're not a European resident.
However, the real amount you get back is different from the stated tax due to commissions and currency exchange. The real figure you get back will be 10-14% depending on the country. This figure comes from experience (we used to shop in Europe a lot :)
Louis Vuitton offers VAT refund everywhere in Europe. To get it, follow these simple steps.
- When you're at Louis Vuitton's checkout with your dream bag, tell the Sales Assistant that you would like to get a VAT refund.
- They will ask for your data and either fill in the documents straight away, or they will give you the Tax Free form with an envelope, filling in all the information they have to provide.
- When you get back to the hotel, make sure that al the fields are filled it and you indicated the way you would like to receive your VAT refund back (it can be either card or cash)
- Before going to the airport, make sure you have the item, its receipt and papers readily available. Do not pack any of these with your luggage. You may be asked to demonstrate the actual item.
- When you get to the airport, look for the 'VAT refund' sign and follow the directions.
- As soon as you reach the 'VAT refund' counter, show them the papers and the receipt. They may ask you do show the item you purchased, although that doesn't happen too often.
- A lot of airports currently have self-service VAT refund post boxes. If you see any of these, just drop the envelope with the tax refund papers and within several weeks you'll get your VAT refund back to the credit card, which you used to pay for your item.
Where Are New Louis Vuitton Bags the Cheapest?
If two years ago when I first wrote this article, UK was a clear winner offering an opportunity to score a bag with 20-25% discount from the US retail price, now with the latest price increases all EU prices are more or less the same. Depending on the price of the bag, you can save from 20% to 40% if you buy an LV bag in Europe.
Please be aware that the EU has the same pricing policy, so the price is exactly the same in France, Spain or Italy. What's different is your VAT refund, but the difference is not huge (11% vs 13%, for instance).
If your vacation is already booked in Europe, why not bring home these beauties at a reduced price? The more expensive is the bag, the better is the refund :)
