If you are wondering what to do with your old designer handbag, our answer is simple - resell it! In the modern world, where we do everything online, it has never been so easy. Moreover, there are lots of people who make money in luxury bag resale. Here is our reseller checklist on how to sell your designer handbag online for cash that will be useful for both fashion lovers and those who want to become a reseller.
The first and the most important thing to do when you sell a designer handbag is to make a good description of a purse and to prove that your bag is authentic, so, in this article, our main focus will be on that.
Take High-Quality Pictures
In the times of YouTube and Instagram, the quality of visual content is extremely important. Blurry or dark photos will hardly attract potential customers. Moreover, the photos should serve as a proof of the authenticity of a handbag. So it is crucial to take photos of all the small details that can give away a fake - hardware, heat stamp, serial number or date code, all the engravings and embossing.
Potential buyers will ask for these photos anyway, so you will just save time if you do it before listing the item, and this way you will reassure your potential customer that you have nothing to hide. Moreover, if you are selling a handbag for $2,000, and there are just 4 pictures of it in the listing, it just looks unprofessional.
Document All the Wear and Tear
Keep in mind that your photos should show the actual condition of the item, do not sugar coat the pictures - buyers need to understand what they are purchasing. Customers are different - some have been on the second-hand market for years, others are buying pre-loved for the first time.
Moreover, it is very important to add a description listing all the wear and tear in case a customer misses something looking through the pics briefly. It is the biggest dilemma - you need to give the most true-to-life description but in a way that it is still marketable.
Avoid These Mistakes: Handbag Description Checklist
I have been in reseller business for quite a long time, and I have noticed some mistakes in the listings that slow down sales. So, here are the things you definitely need to mention in your description that customers pay attention to:
-
Handbag Measurements
You don’t need to actually measure the bag, just look it up on the website.
-
Name of the Handbag
Customers may want to look the bag up and compare it with other listings. Moreover, luxury bag lovers may be looking for that particular model, so you raise the chances of selling the bag as the name will definitely show up in the search.
-
Condition Rank
The condition should be defined compared to a new purse. Don't try to make your wear and tear list as extensive as possible. However, there is another extreme - some sellers just state that the condition is pristine, but looking at the photos it becomes obvious that it certainly isn't. It is one of the common mistakes.
Make sure to mention how the bag looks like, what impression it gives (looks worn or not), if there is some shape loss, etc. Sometimes a bag that has been used for long looks very good as it has been taken good care of, and a bag that has been worn just a couple of times but has been stored incorrectly looks awful. Here are tips on How to Store Your Designer Bags.
-
Main Defects
It is better to list the main defects an item has - canvas/leather, glazing, hardware issues - in order to avoid future returns and refunds that you’ll definitely face in this case. Always make a note that the pictures show the wear and tear better and that the item is pre-loved, not new.
-
Initials or Other Customization
Not all customers are happy to receive a bag and find initials that don’t have anything to do with their first or last name, so, please, be sure to mention it in the description. However, initials are not that big a problem because you can remove them in just 5 minutes. Watch our video and learn how.
-
Mention Odors
It can be a decisive factor for many customers, as sometimes people can’t stand the smell of cigarettes or can simply be allergic.
-
If the Handbag Has Been Repaired
This can be a very important thing for purses of some luxury brands. For example, Louis Vuitton or Hermes warranty immediately expires if their bags have been repaired by a local cobbler.
And you should definitely mention if the bag has been fully repainted. With time, it will show, the paint will start to fade and crack, and you will need to repaint it over and over. Such purses should be listed at a discounted price.
-
Set: What the Purse Comes With
Not all the customers know what a certain purse should come with and can assume different things, so it is very important to mention if the bag comes with a receipt, a box, a dustbag, an authenticity card, a strap, a pouch (often asked about Louis Vuitton Neverfull), a clochette, a lock, a set of keys.
How Much Can I Sell My Designer Purse For?
Setting the price right can be tricky, there is always this problem of asking too much and get no customers, or asking too little and make no money. My advice is to do market research and look up how much consignment shops, second-hand platforms and resellers usually charge for the item you are about to sell, depending on condition.
As we have already mentioned in our guide on How To Clean Out Your Designer Closet and Make Extra Cash, experts advise to price your used clothing at half of their original cost, if they are relatively new and in great condition. Ask for 25% of the current retail price for anything that has been in your closet for several years, and 10% for everything else.
But keep in mind that there are bags that are always in high demand, no matter their age, like, for example, Hermes Birkins or Chanel classic flaps. That means that they are sought after, and you can set a slightly higher price and won’t wait long for someone to snatch it.
Another important thing to mention is to always make room for discount, online customers tend to ask for it.
And the last but not least in our reseller checklist of How to Sell Your Designer Handbag Online for Cash, when listing your purse, don’t forget to indicate the retail price. The amount of money saved compared to buying new bags is why people turn to the pre-loved market. But it is better to state the real price, do not exaggerate, it can have the opposite effect of putting a customer off, especially if they have been on the market long. And, to be honest, it looks suspicious.
