First ideas that come to mind when looking for investment opportunities is real estate, business (or a share in business), stocks and bonds but, being a luxury handbag reseller, I am always asked if it is worth to invest in designer purses. I decided to do a research on one of the most popular designer pieces of all times, see how it stands against inflation in the USA and the S&P 500 index and explain to you why you should invest in Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM right now. 

Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM Price Change Over the Years

First of all, let me briefly tell you the history of Louis Vuitton Neverfull. Though it was introduced only in 2007, the bag soon became a best-seller. At that time it came just by itself and cost $645. It got popular really quickly with the help of celebrities who carried it everywhere. That contributed to the fact the price for Neverfull was constantly rising, and in 2014 it spiked by 25% up to $1,180 when a small internal pouch was added to it.  

Today the bag exists in 3 canvases (Monogram, Damier Ebene and Damier Azur) and in Epi leather. Neverfull comes in 3 sizes - PM, MM and GM, with MM being the most popular (more about it in our Louis Vuitton Neverfull PM/MM/GM Reference Guide). This is the one we chose for our research. Now, after Louis Vuitton increased prices in the USA in May 2020 despite pandemic, a canvas version of Neverfull MM costs $1,500 while the price for a Neverfull MM in Epi is $2,260.

Louis Vuitton Neverfull Price Against USA Inflation

Now let's compare it with the inflation in the USA since 2009. 

It becomes quite clear that the annual rise in price of a Neverfull MM is far more important than the inflation. Since 2009, the price of a Neverfull MM has risen by a shocking figure of 77% (and we didn't even take into account the latest price increase by over 13%)! While the inflation rate has changed by 20%, which is three times less. Even though the price of a Neverfull remained the same in 2014-2017, in 2018 it went up by more than 5% which was still more than the total inflation during these 4 years. Quite good investment prospects, huh?

Louis Vuitton Neverfull Price Against the S&P 500

I would also like to compare Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM price change against one of the most commonly followed equity indices - the S&P 500. 

Here the situation is a bit different. We already know that Neverfull MM has gone up by 77%. During the same time period, the S&P went up and down but overall saw an approximate increase of around 100%. But can we say for sure that Neverfull is a bad investment then? I wouldn't jump to conclusions. First, the gap is not as big as with the US inflation. Second, you can see that the S&P is quite unstable - one year it grows, another year it drastically goes down - while the Neverfull price is constantly rising year after year. So, I would still consider it a good investment that is likely to bring you money if you decide to sell it in the future. 

Why You Should Choose Louis Vuitton Neverfull To Invest In

Apart from the fact that the price for Louis Vuitton Neverfull grows faster than inflation, there are other reasons why it is the best choice of purse to invest in. 

1. Neverfull is the most popular Louis Vuitton bag that is always in very high demand both in retail and on the secondhand market. 

2. It is a very sturdy bag. Its handles may seem thin, but they can hold up to 231 lbs or 100 kg, so it will definitely stand the test of time.

3. This is one of the few bags that doesn't have any major issues. In this model, no cracks appear on canvas, the handles don't tear, stitching doesn't come out. The only problem this bag has is with the internal pocket. It is lined with a material that has a tendency to develop bubbles and peel off, and we saw a lot of items for sale that have this issue while doing our price research. But it is not visible, and it still looks good on the outside. 

Price of Pre-Loved Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM on Online Consignment Platforms

We have decided to do a research and find out how much Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM costs on different online platforms right now. The online platforms we chose are probably the most popular ones - Facebook, eBay and Tradesy. On each platform we gathered information on 100+ Canvas Neverfulls in different condition. Let's see how the price changes!

Price of Pre-Loved Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM on Facebook

On Facebook the price for a Neverfull MM vary from $650 to $1,400. Mostly, the price depends on condition the bag is in, absence/presence of a pouch introduced in 2014, and the colour of the interior lining also matters. Also, keep in mind that prices on Facebook usually include shipping. 

If we take a simple model of a Monogram Neverfull with beige interior and no pouch, the average price for a bag in good condition, that means with normal wear - minor rubs on corners, trim and handles, no stains or really small ones on the interior lining - is $750-850. A bag in worse condition (with stains, dark patina, cracks on the trim) would cost less - around $620, we even came across a bag for $450 but it was quite old and with visible signs of wear. And if you would like a pre-owned bag in immaculate or like new condition, be ready to pay over $950. 

A Neverfull MM with pouch costs around $1,100 - $1,200 even if it is not in the best condition. 

Monogram Neverfulls with more colorful interiors - Pivoine, Cherry, Mimosa or Rose Ballerine (the last two are now discontinued) - cost much more. The average price without a pouch is around $1,150, and with the pouch the price rises up to $1,300. 

If we speak about Damier Ebene canvas, then the classic model with Cherry interior and no pouch in good condition, is around $950. By the way, listings selling this kind of Neverfull are the most numerous on the pre-loved market in general. The simple reason for that is that over the years it remains in a better condition that any other canvases. And I think, that also explains why the average price for a Neverfull in Damier Ebene is slightly higher than for the Monogram one. The same model but with a pouch would cost you around $1,250. 

While doing the research, we found no Neverfull in Damier Ebene listed for less than $700 on Facebook. As for the "like new" condition, be prepared to pay $1,100 and more. 

As for Neverfulls DE with Rose Ballerine interior, they cost around $1,250 (no pouch). 

Now it is the turn of Nevefull Damier Azur. There are not so many listings, but the average price is the same as for the Monogram Neverfull MM with beige interior - $750-$850. For the one with rose interior the price rises to $1,200. 

Price of Pre-Loved Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM on eBay

Before presenting you the prices for Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM on eBay, I should explain how we selected listings to be included in the research. Below you'll see the average prices only from Japanese sellers. Why is that? It is very unlikely to come across a fake bag on the Japanese second-hand market. But keep in mind that prices for Louis Vuitton bags differ from country to country, so a price for a new Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM in Japan is around $1,800. And certainly that influences its price on the pre-loved market, too. So don't be surprised to see that prices are much higher than the ones we saw on Facebook. 

Now let's get to the point. The average price for a Mono Neverfull with beige interior and no pouch on eBay is $1,370. You can find bags for half the price - $600-700 - but for that price you'll get a Neverfull with big cracks on the trim or where parts of the trim have long fallen off, one of the handles may be torn, and the interior is usually quite dirty. We advise to buy such a bag only if you know a good cobbler that can fix it. But, anyway, it can't be considered a good investment as a bag that has been restored is not as valuable and looks more like a fake.

For the same model in excellent condition Japanese eBay sellers ask no less than $1,600 - $1,800 which is almost its retail price. The same Neverfull with pouch costs $2,100. It is interesting that on eBay the price for a Mono Neverfull with other interiors is almost the same as for the beige.

A Neverfull Damier Ebene with red interior without and with pouch also costs around $1,370 and $2,100 respectfully. And for the price you'll pay on Facebook for a purse in good condition, here you'll get one in what is called "junk condition". The price range for a Damier Azur variation is the same. 

Price of Pre-Loved Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM on Tradesy

We included prices on Tradesy in our research as it is one of the biggest luxury fashion resale marketplaces (here are 40+ Best Places To Sell Your Used Clothes Online For Cash). Here is what we found. 

The average price for a Mono Neverfull with beige interior and no pouch in good pre-loved condition is $1,180. But to be honest, it is quite difficult to find a Neverfull in bad condition on Tradesy. Bags in immaculate condition costs around $1,400. If you want your pre-owned Neverfull to come with a pouch, then be sure to pay $1,600. 

Listings with other interiors are not so numerous, but, for example, a Mono Neverfull with cherry interior (no pouch) is the same as its current retail price - $1,500. 

A classic red interior Neverfull MM in Damier Ebene would cost you a little more - $1,250. Here the price doesn't go lower than $900. And again, for a bag in like new condition you'll have to pay the retail price. With pouch included, the price is the same as for the Mono - $1,600. 

On Tradesy, a Damier Azur version with beige interior turned out to be the cheapest of the three canvases - here it costs about $1,050 (no pouch), and its rose ballerine model is $1,400. 

Conclusion

What can we say after gathering and comparing info on Neverfull MM prices on 3 cosignment online platforms? 

If you are thinking whether you should invest in Neverfull MM right now, we advise you to check prices in Facebook groups. They are usually free of all extra fees, except for shipping. So here you'll get the real price you can sell your bag for on the pre-loved market and decide whether it is worth it or not. 

If we take Facebook as a reference, here is how much Neverfull in different condition costs. So, if you come across a Neverfull MM in good pre-loved condition (7.5/10) for less than $700 without a pouch or $1,100 with a pouch, then don't think for too long, or someone else will snatch this luxury deal. 

What's wrong with eBay and Tradesy? Prices there already include commission. On eBay it is around 8% + PayPal commission + shipping. Moreover, it is quite rare that items on eBay sell for the same price they are listed at. There is a very easy way to make an offer there - just click on a special button - while on Facebook you'll need to write a private message to a seller. 

As for Tradesy, the commission rate there is 19.8% for all items above $50. That is even higher than on eBay so we definitely don't advise you to take it as a reference or you will be disappointed when you can't sell your purse for the price you wished for. 

What Determines the Price of a Pre-Loved Neverfull?

Now we can also tell what determines the price of a bag on the pre-loved market:

• condition of the exterior - as we have already mentioned above, Neverfull usually remains in good condition even after many years of use, at least on the outside.
• condition of the interior - that also matters as some people want the interior to be clean, that is especially true for Damier Azur Neverfulls as it is quite difficult to get rid of stains.
• pouch or no pouch - you can see that price for bags with a pouch is much higher than those with no pouch. When the pouch was first introduced, the retail price of the Neverfull skyrocketed, and on the second-hand market, too. Besides, everyone knows that you can sell a pouch separately for about $300. 
• colour of the lining - the more colourful the lining, the higher the price on the pre-loved market. A lot of customers hunt specifically for Monogram Neverfulls with Pivoine interior or for Damier Ebene Neverfull with Rose Ballerine. So if you have one, you can sell it fast and at a higher price. 
• receipt or no receipt - it is also an important thing that buyers pay attention to. If you have a receipt, you can get some small issues a second-hand bag can have fixed by Louis Vuitton as all their items have a warranty period.

Does the Year of Manufacture Impact the Price of the Neverfull? 

No, it doesn't, and that is the beauty of this investment type. If we put aside the fact that new colours of the lining were introduced and a pouch was added over the years, and take for comparison a simple Neverfull manufactured in 2007 and one made in, for example, 2017 in the same condition, the price will be the same. 

Which Louis Vuitton Neverfull - Monogram, Damier Ebene or Damier Azur - Is the Best for Investment?

Without doubt, Monogram Neverfull is a timeless classic. It is one of the most recognizable designer purses in the world, so it is always in high demand and it won't lie unsold in your closet for a long time. There are always people looking for it on consignment platforms. It is definitely a safe choice. But my advice to you: if you have a chance, invest in a Monogram Neverfull with a cherry red or pivoine lining, they sell like hot cakes.

As for Damier Azur version, it is the least practical of the 3 as it requires really good care. You could have noticed that the price for it on the pre-loved market is the same as for the Monogram or less. It can sell quick in spring-summer time when everyone is looking for something light and bright but only if it is in good condition. It will find its buyer but, probably, not as fast as Monogram or Damier Ebene Neverfulls. 

Why a Pre-Loved Neverfull Is a Better Investment Than a Neverfull from a Louis Vuitton Boutique?

Why in this article we only speak about a pre-loved Neverfull as a possibility for a good investment? Why not just buy a new beautiful bag in a Louis Vuitton boutique? You can, but we won't consider it is worth it if your only goal is to resell it in the future. Even if you just buy a Neverfull and store it in your closet so that it remains as good as new, the price for it will certainly go up over the years but so will the prices in general, in other words, inflation. As we have seen, Neverfull price rises quicker than inflation but on average the difference is in 3-6% which is not that good a profit. 

Besides, $1,500 is the price that doesn't include sales tax that is different in each USA state but can reach 10%, and in that case a new Neverfull would cost you not $1,500 but $1 650.
